Some people watch the Winter Olympics for the athletic feats, others for the eye-catching, and sometimes strange, Olympic uniforms. They've certainly changed a lot throughout the years, but they're always worth talking about.
Some uniforms that are stealing the show this year are Mexico's Day of the Dead themed outfits, as well as South Korea's "Iron Man" influenced helmets.
Keep reading to see some of the coolest looks in Pyeongchang this year.

On Valentine's Day, they Norwegian rocked festive, heart-print pants.

The team wore the pants for their match against Japan.

The Mexican Olympic ski team's Day of the Dead inspired uniforms are a clear standout.

The uniform was designed by Hubertus von Hohenlohe, a six-time Olympian and "prince, photographer, businessman, and a pop singer known as Andy Himalaya and Royal Disaster," according to the Washington Post.

Mexico might only have two Alpine skiers in this year's Olympics, but their uniforms definitely make a strong impression.

This South Korean skeleton racer's helmet is designed to look like superhero Iron Man's mask.

According NBC, Sung-bin is "obsessed" with Iron Man. He's seen all the movies and collects related figurines. In fact, he's even called Iron Man by some. We can see why.

The Canadian snowboarding team's jackets were designed to look like sweaters.

The Canadian snowboarding team's jackets were designed by popular snowboard brand Burton - it was Burton's first time designing for the Canadian Olympics team.

The USA's luge uniform takes inspiration from the American flag.

USA luge competitor Emily Sweeney had an unfortunate crash during her final run on February 13, but luckily avoided injury.

Nicole Hensley, the US women's hockey goalie, displays the Statue of Liberty on her mask.

There was actually some controversy surrounding the image of the Statue of Liberty on this helmet. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) debated on whether or not it should be allowed, as some thought Lady Liberty was too political: "political symbols" are not allowed on Olympic uniforms.
The IOC decided on February 13 that the design was allowed to stay.

Adam Rippon made history by being the first openly gay US athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics, and thus the first openly gay US athlete to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. His lightning-inspired costume was perfect for the occasion.

Adam Rippon has become a fan-favorite around the world.

Mirai Nagasu also made history this year — she was the first American woman to land a triple axel in Olympic history. Her red outfit is bold, just like she is.

She's also just one of three women ever to land the jump at the Olympics. Her celebration was well deserved.

The Russian speed skating uniforms feature a stylin' blue camouflage pattern on the sleeves and legs.

Russian Olympians this year are competing as Olympic Athletes from Russia (meaning they are competing under the Olympic flag, as opposed to the Russian one) as part of the country's punishment for its doping scandal.

Kazakhstan's ice blue speed skating uniforms stand out among the mostly black and navy uniforms of other teams.

This is Kazakhstan's eighth Olympic Games.

The Dutch warm-up jackets use their country's favorite color: orange.

Even though the Dutch flag is red, white, and blue, the Dutch Royal Family's official color is orange. The family actually comes from the House of Orange.

Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu rocks a sleek all-black look at practice.

Hanyu was the first man to win an Olympic gold medal for Japan for figure skating in 2014, and is looking to hold on to that title this year.

If you thought the freezing temperatures of the Winter Olympics means the national team uniforms won't be as flashy as the Summer Games, you haven't seen the Norwegian curling team.
For the third-straight Games, the famed Norwegian curlers are sure to be crowd-pleasers with their garish red-and-blue pants and matching jackets. The wild get-ups are courtesy of a partnership with Loudmouth Golf, a Sonoma County-based sportswear brand. The company was founded in 2000 and got its first big client in golfer John Daly, who sported their gear while banned from the PGA Tour in 2009.
Loudmouth inked a deal to provide Norway with curling uniforms for the 2010 Olympics, launching them both to greater fame.
"Whatever they come up with, we're never really surprised," athlete Christoffer Svae told Time. "We've seen it all."

Although more subdued in style, the Team USA uniforms for PyeongChang are no less unusual. The down parkas American athletes have been issued feature a built-in heater. The parkas have three heat settings, controlled by phone, and can be turned on at the touch of a small button. The heat comes via electronic-printed ink designs, which provide heat for up to 11 hours on the lowest setting. (バッテリー駆動ヒーター内臓ジャケット:携帯電話調整付き、11時間持続) "It's the most technologically advanced jacket ever produced," David Lauren of Ralph Lauren Corp. told USA Today. "There have been heatable blankets for kids before but they have wires. This is a fabric with ink that heats up — it's weightless, it's conductive and it's immediate."
They're going to need that extra dose of warmth; temperatures are set to be in the teens in PyeongChang this weekend.
To see more weird and fun Olympics uniforms the athletes will be sporting this February, check out the gallery. For full Olympics coverage, visit our page here.

Kanji of the year 2017 - North

News_20171213193246thumb645xauto1_2Asahi_shimbun_2'Kita' chosen as kanji character best marking mood in 2017
By JIRO OMURA/ Staff Writer, December 13, 2017 at 18:15 JST

KYOTO--The kanji character chosen by the public as best representing 2017 is “kita” (north), symbolizing a year dominated by reports of North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and an underground nuclear test.
In an annual ritual to mark the year-end, Seihan Mori, chief priest of the famed Kiyomizudera temple, painted a giant kita kanji with a calligraphy brush on a sheet of traditional washi paper on Dec. 12.
Kyoto-based organizer Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation said the winning kanji received 7,104, or 4.6 percent, of the 153,594 votes cast in the annual poll.
Of those who picked the winner, many cited North Korea’s repeated military provocations as the reason for their choice.
Other factors that swung the vote in kita's favor include the damage caused by torrential rain in the northern Kyushu region in July, and summertime typhoons in Hokkaido that led to a shortage of potatoes and some packets of chips disappearing from store shelves.
Kita is one of the three characters for Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, and so its selection as kanji of the year could also be an omen for some in Japanese professional baseball.
Star pitcher-hitter Shohei Ohtani decided to move from Sapporo-based Nippon-Ham Fighters to the Los Angeles Angels in the major leagues from next season.
As if to compensate for his departure, promising slugger Kotaro Kiyomiya, who launched 111 home runs at Tokyo’s Waseda Jitsugyo High School, is to start his professional career at the Fighters.

Www_asahi_com_articles_photo_2017_2Jリーグの判定、試合後に正誤を検証へ 審判とチーム側

Jleague_referee_4相互理解深めて

Nikkei_32017/2/24付日本経済新聞 朝刊 アナザービュー 武智幸徳

'Gold' wins kanji of the year after Olympics ... and Trump's hair

Asahi_shimbunThe Asahi Shimbun December 13, 2016 at 15:05 JST
By JIRO OMURA/ Staff Writer

KYOTO--Donald Trump's golden mane of hair has contributed to “kin” (gold) being chosen as the kanji of 2016.
But the main reason people listed when voting for the kanji, which also reads as kane” (money), was not the U.S. president-elect but the haul of 12 gold medals Japan won at the Rio Olympics.
The results of the public vote were announced by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation at Kiyomizudera temple here on Dec. 12. Chief priest Seihan Mori painted the winning character at the event using an extra-long calligraphy brush.
Other reasons listed were public financing controversies plaguing Japan, such as the mushrooming costs of hosting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and Japanese comedian Pikotaro, whose video of him dancing in a gold costume while singing his hit “PPAP” went viral.
Every year, the public is invited to submit nominations for the kanji character that best represents the year. Of 153,562 submissions received in 2016 by the Kyoto-based foundation, 6,655 proposed “gold.”
It is the third time for the character to be selected as the kanji of the year, also topping the chart in 2000 and 2012.
The runner-up kanji was “sen” with 4,723 suggestions. Sen can symbolize "making a choice" and is used to describe elections or referendums and also the athletes chosen to compete at the Olympics.
"Hen," meaning "strange" or "change," came in third with 4,619 votes.
